HarmonyOS
HarmonyOS (HMOS) is a distributed operating system created by Huawei, designed to power smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, smartwatches, personal computers, and a wide range of IoT devices. It features a microkernel design with a unified framework, allowing the OS to dynamically select the most suitable kernel from its abstraction layer based on the device’s hardware resources. Huawei released HarmonyOS in August 2019, debuting the platform on Honor-branded smart TVs. In 2020, the OS was extended to Huawei’s wireless routers and IoT devices, and by June 2021, it had also rolled out to smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. From 2019 to 2024, OS versions 1 through 4 were based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and the Linux kernel, enabling compatibility with many Android apps via sideloading.
