Developer Description
Super Mario Galaxy was crafted by Nintendo EAD Tokyo, a highly acclaimed in-house studio known for delivering some of Nintendo’s most innovative and polished titles. Formed in 2003, this studio quickly gained recognition for its creativity, polish, and innovation—traits that define Super Mario Galaxy.
The game was directed by Yoshiaki Koizumi, a longtime Nintendo developer known for his work on The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, Super Mario Sunshine, and later, Super Mario Odyssey. Under his leadership, the team embraced the challenge of building a 3D Mario game in space, rethinking how gravity, platforming, and camera movement could function in a spherical world.
Nintendo EAD Tokyo pushed the limits of the Wii’s capabilities and introduced gameplay mechanics that were not only fun but also felt intuitive. The studio’s emphasis on blending artistic vision with technical excellence made Super Mario Galaxy a true masterpiece.
In 2015, Nintendo EAD Tokyo merged with another division to become Nintendo EPD (Entertainment Planning & Development), which continues to develop top-tier Nintendo games today.
