Developer Description

Sonic Generations was developed by Sonic Team for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC versions, with Dimps co-developing the Nintendo 3DS version and Devil’s Details handling the PC port. Developed with the Hedgehog Engine, the game was created to mark Sonic’s 20th anniversary, offering two distinct play styles: Classic with 2D side-scrolling action and Modern with fast-paced 3D gameplay. Development began after Sonic Unleashed (2008), with the team, led by director Hiroshi Miyamoto and producer Takashi Iizuka, aiming to reimagine iconic levels in high-definition with enhanced replay value. Challenges included adapting 3D levels for 2D gameplay and recreating classic Sonic mechanics in a modern engine. The 3DS version faced additional hurdles due to unfamiliarity with the system’s capabilities. Debug Mode is not officially accessible in the retail version, though unused debug-related assets (e.g., HUD elements, animations) exist in the game files, and mods like the BetterGenerationsConfigTool reveal unused configuration options like windowed mode and advanced settings.
